English Department Scholarships Awarded

The Department of English honored students with scholarships at its annual reception on April 28. 

Recipients of the Ruth Ann Burton Endowed Scholarship were Meredith Foster, a junior ELAR major from Georgetown; Crystal McKinnie, a junior ELAR major from Mesquite; and Daniel Ooi, a sophomore ELAR major from Malaysia.  The scholarship is awarded in the memory of Mrs. Ruth Ann (Croson) Burton, who received her B.A. from Hardin-Simmons University in 1962 and her M.A. in 1972. Mrs. Burton taught English for a number of years in the Abilene Independent School District before her death. Her husband and daughter, wishing to honor her memory, provided the funds to establish this scholarship, and thus encourage and support outstanding HSU English Majors who intend to teach.
 
Recipents of the Sheryl Somers Fletcher Memorial Scholarship were Kelly McCafferty, a junior English major from Denison; Katelyn Thompson, a sophomore English major from Tatum; and Bryanna Johnson, a junior English major from Klondike. The scholarship was established in 1981 by Dr. B. Byron and Ruth Somers Fletcher in memory of their daughter, Sheryl.  The recipient of the scholarship must be a full-time student majoring in English in good academic standing.
 
Hayley Karkoska, a sophomore English major from Georgetown, was awarded the Fairy Orr Endowed Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was established in Mrs. Orr’s memory by her husband, Clarke Orr, to benefit students in the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts.  The recipient must be majoring in English, maintain an active campus life, and must be in good academic standing.
 
Grace Mitchell, a sophomore ELAR major from Pecos, was awarded the A.C. Turner Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established at Hardin-Simmons University in memory of the late A.C. Turner, father of former HSU President, Dr. Craig Turner. The recipient must be in good academic standing.
 
Casandra Holbrook, a freshman English major from Fulton, was awarded the he E.A. & V. Reiff Endowed Presidential Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1994 by Mrs. Vangie Newman, daughter of former HSU President, Dr. Evan Reiff, and HSU English Professor, Dr. Velma Reiff, to honor dedicated English majors with Christian values who are showing exceptional progress.
