Though students began this Spring semester just a few weeks ago, it is almost time to begin registering for the May Term, Summers I, II and Fall 2015 semesters. Academic advising began on Monday, Feb. 16.

Academic advising is necessary for all students. Before registering for classes, each student must meet with their advisor to choose classes for the upcoming terms.

However, according to the Academic Advising center, meeting with your advisor is more than just picking out classes.

Lindsay Boynton, director of undergraduate advising and disability services says, “Advisors can help you decide between class options, choose a major, and connect you with other campus resources.”

Students who have not declared a major will meet with an advisor in the Academic Advising Center located on the second floor of Sandefer.

Students who have declared a major will make appointments with the advisors of their specific department. Students can log on to HSU Central to find out who their advisor is.

“Making an appointment ensures that your advisor will be in their office when you go and you will receive your advisor’s full attention,” states the Academic Advising Center website.

When making the appointment, the academic advising center suggests students show up at least a few minutes early, and have a general idea of what courses are needed and available for the upcoming semesters.

The Academic Advising Center encourages students to meet with their advisors as soon as possible.

“Don’t wait until the week before school starts to see an advisor,” the Academic Advising Center website writes, “because many classes are full by this point which can cause delays to your degree plan.”

There is an Academic Advising Centers page on the Hardin-Simmons website detailing information that may help answer questions along with resources such as degree worksheets, individualized four year plans, a sample schedule worksheet, questions to ask advisors and the HSU catalog. By using the catalog, students will be able to look at classes before they meet with their advisors.

“Advisors are here to help you make the most of your HSU experience,” said Boynton.

Advisors are your friends and will work to the best of his/her ability to help you be successful in your career at Hardin-Simmons.
