POSITION: Provost and Chief Academic Officer (Exempt)

LOCATION:  Abilene, TX

START DATE:  Review of candidate materials will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The candidate chosen for this position will begin employment no later than June 1, 2018.

The University offers over 50 Majors, 32 minors, and 8 degrees (BA, BS, BBS, BBA, BSHS, BFA, BSN, BM) at the undergraduate level.  Hardin-Simmons offers 8 master's degrees and 3 doctoral degrees, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, the Doctor of Ministry, and the Doctor of Leadership.  Hardin-Simmons University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Provost and Chief Academic Officer reports to the President of the University and will work closely with the other vice-presidents, deans of academic units, and staff of other units in establishing the overall academic priorities of the University.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • The job is sedentary in nature
  • Must be able to sit for long periods while performing office and computer operations
  • Some minor lifting may be required (up to 20-25 pounds)

TRAVEL/TIME REQUIREMENTS:  

  • This is an Exempt Level Professional Position which often requires more than a 40-hour work week. Frequent evenings and/or Saturday's are required for attendance at various special events on campus, including graduation, awards ceremonies, banquets, athletic events, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  The Provost and Chief Academic Officer is expected to exemplify the core values of the University and should possess the following qualifications:

  • An earned doctoral degree in her/his field from an accredited institution
  • Established record of academic/scholarly achievement that demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence
  • Proven experience as an academic administrator
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and University constituencies
  • Commitment to support faculty in ways that enhances teaching, research, and scholarship
  •  Proven experience in strategic planning, establishing outcomes, and assessment that leads to continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness
  • Deep personal commitment to Christian higher education in the Baptist tradition
  • Ability to communicate effectively within the context of a Baptist University and Baptist life
  • A person of character and integrity
  • An established record of teaching excellence at the university level
  • Possesses an informed understanding of the challenges facing Christian higher education in the twenty-first century and an openness to innovation to meet those challenges
  • Strong leadership ability
