Dr. Larry Wolz was guest lecturer at a symposium in Antwerp, Belgium on March 18, 2008. The symposium was sponsored by the Flemish Music Research Center, part of the Flemish Royal Conservatory of Antwerp University. The research center was celebrating its 10th anniversary as well as launching a research project on Frank van der Stucken (1858-1929), one of the conservatory's distinguished graduates who was born in Fredericksburg, Texas. Wolz, the only American to speak at the symposium, was invited because of his extensive research on van der Stucken over the years. The topic of his lecture was "The Songs of Frank van der Stucken: Music of two continents and two traditions." He also sang two of the composer's songs during the course of the lecture. Wolz gave a lecture for one of the music classes at the conservatory as well as coaching two students who were to sing a short recital of van der Stucken's songs during the symposium.
Also while in Antwerp, he was able to study the archive of materials on Frank van der Stucken in the library at the Flemish Conservatory, gathering more material for a future book on the composer. Participation in this symposium was funded with grants from the Flemish Music Research Center and the Cullen Fund for Faculty Enrichment at HSU.
