HSU Physical Therapy Study Mentioned in National Publication

A study performed by Dr. Dennis O’Connell, professor of physical therapy and Shelton-Lacewell endowed chair, and Mary Lou Garrett, assistant professor of physical therapy and director of clinical education, was mentioned in the February 19, 2007, issue of Today in PT. The article, “A Weighty Matter,” discusses the efforts of physical therapists nationwide to confront the pediatric obesity epidemic. It includes information from the study performed by Dennis and Mary Lou that explored the role of parents in the pediatric obesity epidemic.

Dennis says the study found that “childhood obesity is under the control of the parent.” He also points out that physical therapists have a critical role in teaching parents to provide a healthier lifestyle for their children and suggests reminding parents that some activity is better than no activity. He also recommends that physical therapists set up clinics with a fitness component added to the patient’s rehab.
