The Turkey Day 5K Fun Run will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012, to benefit Connecting Caring Communities. The event is hosted by Hardin-Simmons University’s Student Congress and Student Activities. The run begins at 8 a.m. in the Abilene Civic Center northwest parking lot.
Connecting Caring Communities is charged with running the three Abilene Friendship Houses. HSU students and faculty members volunteer to help support programs in the North Park Friendship House, north of the campus at Lowden and Hickory Streets.
Among the volunteer opportunities, there are children and youth after-school programs, community lunches, periodic neighborhood cleaning and house painting days, and neighborhood parties. Since the creation of the friendship houses city-wide, neighbors know each other better and neighborhood children have a place to go until parents can pick them up after work.
The Turkey Day 5K is open to anyone who wants to participate.
A registration form is necessary, says Brittany Suell, coordinator of student activities at HSU, and long sleeve t-shirts are also available while supplies last. The registration form can be found on the
www.abilenerunners.com website under Races/November (this race is not the same as the 5K Turkey Trot.) Registration forms can also be picked up in the basement of Moody Center at HSU in the Student Organization Center. Registration cost is $15.
