Homecoming 2012 marks a half century plus one year for the popular student-run extravaganza at Hardin-Simmons University. Complete with lively music, costumes, and well-tuned musical vocals, students have been putting together All-School SING for exactly five decades.
The extravagant and always-humorous Homecoming performance is a not-to-be-missed event for returning alumni, students, faculty, staff, and the Big Country and Abilene community.
The show is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, October 12-13, 2012, in HSU’s Behrens Auditorium at 8:00 p.m. On Thursday, October 11, 2012, HSU students, faculty, and staff can view the dress rehearsal performance at a reduced price.
Two music fraternities plan and prepare for the student-produced show, which showcases some of the best musical talent at Hardin-Simmons. Money raised by the fraternities goes to help with scholarships for high school students attending the HSU Summer Music Festival and for major expenses by the HSU School of Music and Fine Arts.
Social clubs and other student groups are given seven to nine minutes to put on fully choreographed, vocal, orchestra-accompanied numbers. Acts from previous years have spanned from Broadway and musical show tunes, to dancing white-gloved hands in the darkened auditorium.
The individual acts are eligible for five awards: Best Vocals, Best Choreography, Best Creativity, Runner-up, and First Place. The shows are judged on Friday and Saturday nights by a panel of five judges, with a different panel of judges each night.
All-School SING is hosted and planned by Sigma Alpha Iota and Phi Mu Alpha, the two music fraternities at Hardin-Simmons, as a School of Music and Fine Arts fundraiser. However, the show is a collaborative effort of many student organizations across the campus with about 200 students involved in the production.
In addition to the competitive numbers, other acts keep the audience entertained in-between performances including the “World-Famous” Cowboy band and the Spurs Dance Team.
