Grammy Award-winning violinist, Timothy Ying, noted for his many styles of music, is conducting a master’s class this morning, February 12, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at Hardin-Simmons University. The event will be in the Woodward-Dellis Recital Hall. It is free and open to the public.
Ying will work publically with several students chosen from the studio of Dr. Peter Isaacson, director of the HSU Orchestra. Ying and Isaacson are former classmates at the Eastman School of Music.
Winning a Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover recording and two Grammy nominations for Best Chamber Music recording, Ying is also known for folk and jazz styles. A recent collaboration with pianist and composer Billy Childs was nominated for a 2010 Grammy for Jazz Ensemble. The violinist has also been awarded several coveted grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America.
In addition to his performing activities, Ying is committed to the academic study of music. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Juilliard School, New York, NY; a Master of Arts degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois; and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York.
Ying currently serves on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory, Toronto, Canada; he has served as a tenured faculty member at the Eastman School, where he was chair of the chamber music department; and he was the Blodgett Artist-in-Residence at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, for seven years.
Ying performed for over 20 years with the Ying Quartet, which appeared in every major city in North America; and made tours abroad to Europe, the Far East, and Australia. He has performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House, and at numerous prestigious festivals.
The master class is free and open to the public. It will be in the Woodward-Dellis Recital Hall, 10:30 a.m. February 12.
