Sustaining U.S. Global Leadership: Priorities for 21st Century Defense
The White House and the Pentagon have released a national defense guidance plan addressing the
increasingly complex global security environment with its challenges, opportunities, and strategic
risks for the United States military. The plan describes a transition for the U.S. military as it
regroups to focus on broader challenges, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, while working to maintain
progress in the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa. The United States will continue to invest in
intelligence, anti-access technologies, surveillance and reconnaissance programs, and counterterrorism capabilities.
