God led my daughter as an undergrad to HSU in 1996…over my objections. She tried desperately to convince me that the Forty Acres was a special place, a home away from home, a family. The first time I set foot on the campus I understood what she had been trying to tell me. In 1997, my husband and I moved to Abilene, and I took a job at HSU in the Facilities Office. During those six years, my daughter was graduated, and I entered the Masters program in Counseling and Human Development. Thanks to the mentoring and guidance from Dr. Bob Barnes, Dr. Dorothy Barnes, and Dr. Curtis Garner, I completed the program, earned my licensure as a professional counselor, became certified as a school counselor, and was accepted into a doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision. An interesting aside… my daughter, is completing her PhD and has also returned as a professor in the Theatre Department at HSU.
I have taught in some form for 18 years with students from Pre-K to college. I have worked as an artist, x-ray technician, prison employee, secretary, teacher, and most recently as a high school counselor. In January 2008, I was afforded the opportunity to teach as an adjunct in the COHD department at HSU. God opened the doors for me to gain a full-time position an Assistant Professor. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to contribute to a department and a university that has meant so much to me and my family. I am humbled to be associated with such an incredible faculty and staff and an inspiring Christian university that truly provides an education enlightened by faith. I have returned home!
