"Faith . . . is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted in spite of your changing moods." --C. S. Lewis
When my non-teacher friends start counting the months until they can retire, I feel kind of left out. It's not that I love teaching so much that I'd love doing it under any conditions. I love teaching at HSU because here there is an immense mutual respect among the faculty. They eagerly learn from each other: poets learn from chemists, artists learn from historians, computer scientists learn from musicians, and everybody learns from the librarians. Add to this the Christian ethos and the opportunities to pursue scholarly and creative projects, and we've got one--mostly--happy faculty. This spills over into the classroom, where we encourage students to fearlessly explore ideas as they seek to discover their gifts and interests. In the process, they often discover a call to service. Watching them find those gifts, interests, and callings is the big payoff! "Long may thy worth increase, long live thy noble cause!"
