Dr. Dan Stiver

Dr. Dan R. Stiver is the Cook-Derrick Professor of Theology in the Logsdon School of Theology and teaches especially in the Logsdon Seminary. He is a graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in religion with honors, studying his senior year at Regent’s Park College, Oxford University.

He received his Master of Divinity from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, and completed his graduate studies with a Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where he then taught in the department of Christian Philosophy for 14 years.

Stiver began teaching at Hardin-Simmons in 1998. He has engaged in advanced study at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Tübingen, and Oxford University. His publications include The Philosophy of Religious Language: Sign, Symbol, and Story (1996), Theology after Ricoeur: New Directions in Hermeneutical Theology (2001), Life Together in the Way of Jesus Christ: An Introduction to Christian Theology (2009), and Ricoeur and Theology, forthcoming.

Stiver has also authored chapters for numerous books and articles for journals. He frequently presents papers to professional meetings such as the American Academy of Religion, the Society for Ricoeur Studies, the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, the Baptist Association of Philosophy Teachers, and the New Mexico/West Texas Philosophical Society. He has served as president of several of these professional societies and organizations, as well as a nonprofit in Abilene. Dr. Stiver served as pastor in Missouri and Indiana and is a member of the Abilene Interfaith Council.
