The mission of Hardin-Simmons University is to be a community dedicated to providing excellence in education enlightened by Christian faith and values.

Founded in 1891 by a dedicated group of ministers, ranchers, and merchants, Hardin-Simmons University continues its commitment to developing the mind and nurturing the spiritual life of its students. Affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas since 1941, HSU provides an academically challenging undergraduate education based on a liberal arts foundation, and advances scholarly growth by offering specialized graduate and professional degree programs. Gazebo and Reflection pond

In 1978 Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Wood presented the University with a gift for the campus beautification, which resulted in the building of the reflection pond. In 1979 on the occasion of the Class of 1929's 50th anniversary, the class made a gift which was to construct the gazebo near the pond.
