Check In

Camper registration will begin at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 9th, 2013 at the Hardin-Simmons University Hemphill Music Building. Festival staff and counselors will be on hand to assist parents and students. Campers are strongly discouraged from checking in earlier than 30 minutes prior to their seating audition time. Audition times will be mailed along with additional camper information.

Check Out

Check out time for resident campers is 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 15th, 2013. Last meal served will be breakfast on Saturday. After checking out of the residence hall, resident campers may proceed to Behrens Auditorium for their respective orchestra dress rehearsals (parents are welcome to attend these rehearsals). THERE WILL BE NO SUPERVISION AVAILABLE FOR CAMPERS AFTER THE DRESS REHEARSAL. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN UNATTENDED. Parents are responsible for campers' lunch on Saturday and for returning them to Behrens Auditorium for the Grand Finale Concert.

From I-20 eastbound or westbound:
Take exit #286-A (US 83 Business). Turn right at the end of the ramp to proceed south on US 83 Business/Pine St. When US 83 Business veers to the left (just past Lowden St.) stay in the right lane in order to go straight and remain on Pine St. – do not follow Treadaway Blvd. Take a right at the next street (Vogel St.) and then a left at the second street (Cedar St.) into the HSU campus. Proceed into the large parking lot between the Hemphill Music Building and the Cowboy Band Hall. Check-in for campers will be in the Hemphill Music Building – look for the ASMF banner!

Within Abilene:
Go north on Pine St. from downtown Abilene. Take a left at Ambler Ave. and take the next right into the HSU campus (Hickory St.). After passing Behrens Auditorium on your left (do not take the left turn up the hill) proceed into the large parking lot between the Hemphill Music Building and the Cowboy Band Hall. Check-in for campers will be in the Hemphill Music Building – look for the ASMF banner!

Follow directions above to the Hardin-Simmons University campus; after taking a right at Vogel St., take a left at the next street (Cypress St.) and proceed into the large parking lot. Within Abilene
Follow directions above to the Hardin-Simmons University campus but cross Ambler Ave. and take a left at the next street/campus entrance (Linebery Blvd.). Take a right at the next street (Cypress St.) and proceed into the large parking lot. Walk west between Behrens Hall and Lange Hall and up the hill, turning left at the top of the hill for the front entrance to Behrens Auditorium. A campus map may be downloaded here.

Housing

Resident campers are housed in the residence halls on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University. Typically, two campers are assigned to one room with an adjoining bathroom shared by another room. Campers may be assigned to a single room. Resident campers are strictly prohibited from visiting a residence hall floor occupied by members of the opposite sex.

Meals

All meals are served in the HSU cafeteria in the Moody Center. For resident campers, the first meal is dinner on Sunday and the last meal is breakfast on Saturday. For day campers, the first meal is lunch on Monday and the last meal is dinner on Friday. Please consult the “Daily Schedule” for specific meal times.

Registration Fee

All participants must pay a non-refundable $50 registration fee which will be applied to tuition. Total fee is due by May 24th, 2013. A late fee of $50 will be assessed after May 24th, 2013.

Early Withdrawal Refund

100% refund (minus the $50 registration fee) will be given to campers withdrawing prior to May 31st, 2013. No refunds will be given for early withdrawal during the duration of the camp for any reason.

Transportation

Transportation will be provided for any off-campus performances or activities within Abilene during the week of the ASMF.

Medical Care Requirements

All campers are required to provide their medical history and have their parent/guardian sign a release statement for any health care needs. Medical history/release forms are sent with final instructions after campers have enrolled. Any medication which the camper intends to bring to the HSU campus must be indicated on their medical history/release form.

Supervision

The ASMF is fully staffed with the assistance of HSU. All music activities are supervised by the faculty or teaching assistants. All non-music activities are supervised by the ASMF counselors. Campers may not visit a different residence hall floor than their own or visit rooms of the opposite sex.

Camp Counselors

The ASMF counselors are chosen from music students at Hardin-Simmons University. The counselors guide the students to rehearsals, classes, and activities in addition to supervising them during the day and night. The counselors are also housed in the residence halls, on the same floors as the campers.

Sunday Activities (June 9th, 2013)

Student Concert

All campers will wear their camp t-shirts for the Student Concert.

Grand Finale Concert

Male: Black pants, white shirt, black shoes, black socks, black bow tie

Female: Black skirt (length must be below the knee), or black dress pants, white blouse (shoulders and midriff must be covered), black or natural pantyhose, black shoes (no flip-flops). Cellists must wear dress pants or wide dress/skirt.

What to Bring

Residence Hall Items: Bed sheets (twin size) or sleeping bag, pillows, blankets, toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrush, etc.), towels, washcloths, hand soaps, hangers, and alarm clock.

Clothing: Bring casual clothing suitable for West Texas hot weather. T-shirts must reflect good taste. Bring comfortable shoes. There are no laundry facilities available during the camp. Campers should bring at least one change of clothing for each day of the camp.

For rehearsals: Campers must bring their own instrument (unless you have spoken with ASMF about instrumental rental). Be sure to bring instrument, appropriate instrument accessories (reeds, extra strings, rock stop, rosin, extra strings, bass stool, etc…).

Optional items: Swimsuit, sunscreen, umbrella, cell phone/long distance calling card, snacks.

Spending Money: Campers may want to bring extra cash for incidental expenses. It is also common for campers to pool their resources and order pizza following evening activities. The parent or guardian should decide the appropriate amount to send with the camper. There are no change machines (counselors, faculty members, and Music Building personnel do not carry change).
