Alumni & Friends

  Dear 1971 HSU Classmate,

Sometimes it seems just a few years ago. Other times it seems like ages have passed. You may have stayed in touch with some classmates. Others you may not have seen for 4 decades.

Well, mark your calendars for the weekend of October 21-23. Join other exes and graduates of HSU’s class of 1971 for the 40th anniversary of our graduation. It promises to be a weekend of fun and an opportunity to renew old friendships or develop new ones!

We need you to attend to make our reunion even more memorable and fun. Encourage all your friends from our class to attend the Reunion as well. A personal call will do wonders. We have the potential for the largest turnout of any of the 40-Year classes in some time because we feel we are a special class.

Add your memories to this list--especially the funny ones! We can’t wait to see you in October!

We’re delighted that one of our  classmates, Elizabeth Cohorn Abernethy, is being given the Distinguished Alumni Award during this year’s Alumni Awards Banquet (6:30p).

Join in laughter and fellowship at the home of John and Judy Wilcoxen (’73X) Powell. Our Class of 1971 Come & Go Get-Together begins at 7:30p and lasts until everyone leaves. 1602 Elmwood 79605. Your family is welcome, as are members of the classes of 1970 and 1972.

Saturday, October 22

Please see the Schedule of Events in the Homecoming Brochure for the many activities on Saturday. Check for updates at www.hsutx.edu/homecoming. (And get the updated schedule of events when you register.)

As you select the Saturday activities you’re interested in attending, be sure to include:

  • 8:00am to 11:45am. The HSU Academic Showcase (where the pool tables once stood in Moody Center). Add your name to the “Who’s Here For Homecoming” banner and see which classmates have arrived so far. Visit with Faculty members at the featured Academic Displays and gather interesting HSU facts to brag about to your friends back home.
  • 10:00-11:15am. New this year is the School of Music and Fine Arts Homecoming Gala. Come & go or come & stay.
  • 12:00 to 1:00pm. Homecoming Cookout is where everyone meets. (Over 600 attended the 2010 Cookout.) Look for the “1980s” sign so you can visit with classmates over fresh-cooked gourmet hamburgers and hotdogs. At 12:10, hear the World Famous Cowboy Band. Then join in with the HSU Cheerleaders and Spurs to cheer the Cowboys to victory.
  • We will sit together in the Northwest general admission section for the football game at 1:30pm.

Class of 1971 Reunion Dinner (6:00pm). Don’t miss this fun-filled occasion to reminisce and laugh with our HSU classmates. Our special entertainment is folk group Catclaw Creek. Performers include Bill Casey (’71), Jim Jones (’75), Dr. Taylor Rankin (former HSU faculty), and Greg Young.

Class Photos will be taken during dinner and are available for purchase at $11.

Members of the classes of 1970 and 1972 are also welcome to attend. Tickets will be available at registration and at the door. The location will be listed in the Homecoming Program Book you’ll receive at Registration.

1971 Class Reunion Souvenir Memory Books. Whether you plan to attend Homecoming or not, please take a minute and fill out the enclosed Reunion Memory Book form and return it by Friday, October 1. A fill-in version is available on-line at www.hsutx.edu/homecoming. Be sure to order a copy of the Memory Book to read what everyone else has written.

Sunday, October 23

The greatest Class Reunion and HSU Homecoming to-date will conclude with an Alumni-Led Worship Service in Logsdon Chapel from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Top off your wonderful and memorable reunion with this inspirational service led by the honored reunion classes.

Our own 1971 classmates will be part of the service and presentations. Casual dress is suitable in preparation for your return trip and continental breakfast will be served before and after the service. Attend and reflect upon the wonderful and inspiring weekend and visit with friends.

Plan now to attend the 40th Reunion of the HSU Class of 1971!
