Hardin-Simmons University president Dr. W. Craig Turner announced at
the 50th annual reunion of the Wiman Family at Camp Butman on the
weekend of July 27th the establishment of the Ruth Wiman Endowed
Scholarship in honor of retired Roscoe teacher Ruth Wiman. The scholarship
was made possible by the support of her family, friends and students.
Scholarship
awards are to be made to deserving students at HSU. All
gifts and donations received by the university and designated
for this scholarship shall be devoted in perpetuity to
the purpose of this scholarship.
Ruth
Wiman was born the 11th of 13 Wiman children and grew
up in a loving Christian home. In 1934, she and four
siblings were all students at HSU.
Throughout
the Depression, Ruth's parents made great sacrifices
to provide opportunities for the education of all their
children. Ruth wanted to become a home economics teacher
and, because HSU did not offer such a degree, she transferred
to Texas Tech in Lubbock. However, HSU has always remained
special to Ruth Wiman.
After
graduation, she spent her life in service to others,
teaching home economics, first in rural West Texas schools,
then in Roscoe for 32 years. Throughout her life and
career, she has been teacher, counselor and friend to
multitudes. She has been described as a best friend to
everyone she knows.
The
Ruth Wiman Endowed Scholarship is perpetual and will
continue to give throughout the life of the university
by using only the income from the endowment in the awarding
of the scholarships.
"These
scholarships will impact the lives of an untold number
of students, offering them financial assistance and aid
in securing a Christian higher education," said
Dr. Turner. "Awarding of the scholarship will be
based on student need and academic record."
Dr.
Turner commended Ruth Wiman on behalf of the HSU Board
of Trustees, the faculty, staff, students and administration
of HSU for her life of service.
The
scholarship remains open and continues to receive gifts
honoring the life of Ruth Wiman.
