The Ethel Hicks Endowed Scholarship has been established at Hardin-Simmons
University. The scholarship will be awarded to students who are from
Hendrick Home for Children or Ben Richey Boys Ranch.
Dr.
W. Craig Turner, president, announced the establishment
of the scholarship in honor of Mrs. Hicks, a former dorm
director for HSU's Blanche Lange Hall for 10 years who
also served as a dorm director at Wayland Baptist University,
Plainview, before moving to Abilene. She
died April 9, 2002.
Mrs.
Hicks was married to Alvis L. Hicks, who served as a
pastor of Baptist churches in West Texas until his death
in 1954.
Claude
Hicks, retired president of Hendrick Home for Children,
established an endowment in honor of his mother in 1999.
He is a former member of the administrative staff at
HSU and also has served as a member of the Board of Trustees.
He is a current member of the Board of Development.
"We
truly are grateful to Claude Hicks for this generous
gift which has become an endowed scholarship in honor
of Mrs. Ethel Hicks, a former dorm director of HSU," said
Dr. Turner.
Mrs.
Hicks had four children. Her three daughters are all
retired teachers. They are Marie Stockard of Levelland,
Alice Scarborough of Petersburg and Louise Street of
Sherman. Her son, Claude, is the retired head of Hendrick
Home for Children. He served on the HSU staff from 1957
to 1965. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees
from HSU. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree
from HSU in December 2000. A
granddaughter, Linda Scarborough Powell, is a graduate
of HSU, served on the English faculty and is a past president
of the HSU Alumni Association.
