About Sigma

Chartered in 1961, with our first pledge class in 1962, Sigma Delta Sigma is the oldest men's club at Hardin-Simmons University.

Traditions like Thunderball, Gold and White, as well as our mascot, Johnny Harkrider, continue the long history of our club. The men of Sigma are active in many areas of campus, from the Kelley College of Business to the School of Music; the membership of Sigma represents a wide cross-section of the student body of Hardin-Simmons.

Traditions

The traditions of Sigma continue through our sublime social events, such as Thunderball and Gold and White formal. Thunderball, which takes place every spring, was the first off campus co-ed social event in HSU history. Due to the sensitive nature of the event, the destination was kept secret and the event codenamed "Thunderball" after the James Bond movie.

The Legend of Johnny Harkrider

However, social events are not our only traditions. One tradition, which draws a great deal of questions, is that of our mascot, Johnny Harkrider. Legends have arisen about Johnny, and like all legends, these are difficult to substantiate, but they live on in the memory of our members.

It is said that one year Johnny was enrolled in class, and members went and sat in his place. The plot was quickly uncovered and foiled, however, but members still claim that Johnny maintained a 4.0 GPA during his brief tenure as a student.

Johnny deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, serving bravely in an area frequently attacked by insurgents.

Johnny was also nominated for and elected University King one year. The powers-that-be were quite embarrassed for falling for the prank, but they could not find a reason keep Johnny from his crown. He had, in fact, won the election. Eventually though it was discovered that Johnny was not pursuing twelve hours at Hardin-Simmons, so he was not a full-time student and therefore ineligible to be crowned.
