Course Content

This course will focus on the art/study of writing contrapuntal music of the early eighteenth century, especially in the style of J. S. Bach. This class will examine representative compositions from the period and their predecessors, both sacred and secular. These compositions and the text by Harold Owen will serve as models for composition projects in the class.

Course Goals

  • To understand principles of contrapuntal combination, musical structure and form through analysis. 

  • To learn the techniques, rules, and problems of contrapuntal writing through assignments. 

  • To exhibit creativity and experience the challenges of the contrapuntal style through original composition.

Attendance Expectations

Regular class attendance is required. Assignments will be explained and critiqued. As a courtesy, please contact and/or leave a message for Ms. Choi if an emergency renders you unable to attend class. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR AND KEEP UP WITH HIS OR HER ASSIGNMENT (INCLUDING UNIVERSITY-RELATED ABSENCES), NOT THE PROFESSOR’S.

Grading Policy: A tentative breakdown of the final grade: (subject to change)

Class Participation and Attendance 10%

More than three unexcused absences may result in the lowering of the final grade (One Letter Grade).

Daily assignments 15%

Late assignments (ten points lowered) will not be accepted more than one class period past the due date.

Free piece (minuet) 25%

Homework not turned in will be given a grade of zero.

Two-voice invention 30%
Three-voice fugue 20%
Total
