International Studies Scholarship Information
For Students:
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
This scholarship, named in honor of Barry M. Goldwater seeks to foster and encourage excellence in science and mathematics. Awards will be made to outstanding students, to be known as Barry M. Goldwater Scholars, in the spring of 2003 for use during the 2003-2004 academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students—those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the 2003-2004 academic year—who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. HSU may nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during 2003-2004. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Junior level recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of support and senior level recipients for one. Up to 300 scholarships are awarded annually and the application deadline is February 1, 2003. Interested students should begin by checking the program web site: www.act.org/goldwater and then come see me for assistance.
The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship
This is a general scholarship and is open to any student who is currently attending HSU. The award amount will be variable up to a maximum of $30,000 annually to fund tuition and fees for the remainder of the scholar's undergraduate degree. Monies are not transferable from one year to the next, but are renewable each year for the duration of the degree program, as long as the scholar continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants must have achieved sophomore or junior standing at the time of nomination, have a high level of achievement as demonstrated by superior grades, academically rigorous courses, and participation in challenging extracurricular activities, especially those demonstrating leadership potential. Application materials become available in January each year with a nomination deadline of April 1. Awards are made in July for the coming school year. Interested students should consult the program web site: www.jackkentcookefoundation.org for more complete information. I will assist them with the assembly of their application materials and prepare the institution nomination.

This scholarship is named to honor the former U.S. Senate Majority Leader's pivotal leadership in the Northern Ireland peace process and is for the purpose of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, ages 18 to 30, and college graduates at the time that the award is received (graduating seniors are encouraged to apply). The postmark deadline for all application documents is October 10, 2002, and in view of the tight competition timeline, no exceptions are permitted. Twenty finalists will be selected and invited to Washington DC for interviews in November and the Mitchell Scholars for 2003-2004 will be announced in January. Mitchell Scholar candidates should demonstrate strong records of achievement in three fields: academic excellence, leadership and community service. Scholarships provide tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and international travel. There is no restriction on s Scholar's proposed academic discipline provided that it is offered as a degree or certificate program at a university in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Mitchell Scholars normally are in one year Master's programs. Interested students should begin by checking the program web site: www.mitchellscholar.org and then come see me for assistance.
