Social Work Club Officers for 2016-2017

    • Michelle Fernandez - President
My name is Michelle Fernandez and I have the honor of serving as the Social Work Club President this year! I am a senior social work student from Garland, TX. In my four years here, I have been strongly involved on campus in promoting diversity efforts as well as finding avenues to help students find their niche. I have been a member of Koinonia, founder of the Black Students Association, President of The Plug, and have even interned in the student life department as the multicultural department intern. Along with serving as your president this year, I am also an intramural supervisor while completing my field placement at Abilene Hope Haven. I have a passion for helping my peers, encouraging diversity, and learning from others. Life obstacles have molded me to take full advantage of opportunities that require dedication and hard work. I am excited to serve as President of Social Work Club while taking full advantage to lead and work with one another.
    • Hannah VanHousen - Vice President
My name is Hannah VanHousen and I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve as Vice President for the Social Work Club! I am a junior from North Richland Hills, Texas. I transferred here from a small Christian college in Dallas after my Freshman year, hoping that Hardin-Simmons would be a better fit for me, and it definitely is. Coming to Hardin-Simmons, I thought I would be pursuing a psychology degree, but God had other plans for me and led me to the Social Work department where I found my passion. I am involved on campus and in my community as a part of a home team through Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, a volunteer at Pregnancy Resources of Abilene, and an active member of the on campus women's social club Alpha Iota Omega. I can't wait to see how God uses the Social Work Club this year to bless and serve Hardin-Simmons as well as the community.
    • Emily (Fitzhugh) Gurley - Secretary
My name is Emily (Fitzhugh) Gurley and I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve as Secretary for the Social Work Club! I am a junior Social Work major and Leadership minor from Abilene, Texas. My family has a long history at Hardin-Simmons so I grew up coming to campus and knowing its mission. When it came time to select a college, I knew Hardin-Simmons would fit me perfectly. I love Hardin-Simmons and the caring connections with professors and students. I have developed a passion for serving people through my future profession. My Leadership Studies complement my social work program because I have the confidence to organize, advocate, and persuade others to "be the change" we want to see in the world. Also at HSU, I met, dated, and married my sweet husband, Tyler. I would not trade the memories I have made at HSU for anything. My volunteer experience includes serving as a “Big” for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, advocating for Noah Project, and serving on Mission Teams in Ecuador, Ireland, and inner city Dallas. I am an active member at Beltway Park Church, where I volunteer with the middle school youth. Professionally, I am interested in working with children and families and I am very passionate about helping at-risk children through social work in the schools or in the foster care system. I am excited about working with others who share my passion for this field through the Social Work Club.
    • Paige Bailey - Treasurer
My name is Paige Bailey and I will be serving as this year’s Social Work Club treasurer! I’m a senior Social Work major and will be completing my field placement at the Abilene/Taylor County Child Advocacy Center! I like to laugh, have fun and I’m full of random facts and funny stories, so if you ever need a laugh come find me! I’m so excited to be an officer this year and get to know everyone better!
    • Micaela Stevens - Photographer
My name is Micaela Stevens, and I am super excited to be serving as photographer for the Social Work Club again this year! I am a Senior from Graham, Texas, though I grew up in Vancouver, Washington. I am a Social Work major, hoping to go into adoption with a focus on older kids that end up getting "stuck" in the system. I'm very excited to get to know all of you and to take pictures of all the amazing things we get to do in Social Work Club this year! Let's all have a great year!
    • Miranda Stewart - Chaplin
My name is Miranda Stewart, and I am honored to be serving as the Chaplain for the Social Work Club this semester! As this is a new role for the group, I am looking forward to seeking what God has in store for this position. I am a Social Work major from Kyle, Texas. I am a part of the HGT living-learning community, and I thoroughly enjoy traveling to the National Parks with this group. Some of my favorite activities are reading, camping, hiking, serving, and writing! I am looking forward to knowing you.
