(Abilene, Texas) The Hardin-Simmons University Art Department is hosting an exhibit of oil, acrylic and mixed media paintings, and photographs by three Abilene artists: Teysha Vinson, Turner Vinson, and Tony Brown, Jan. 23 – Feb. 17, 2017. There will be a reception with the artists present on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017 from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. The public is invited. Regular gallery hours are 9:00 am -5:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday, Friday: 9 am – 2 pm; or by appointment (call 325-670-1246).

Teysha Vinson was born in Abilene, went to college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX where she received her BFA in photography and ad design, and then went on to Boise State University in Idaho to gain her MFA in photography. She now teaches adjunct at McMurry and HSU. She has a great love for the outdoors and the West and tries to get to both of those places as often as possible. This love she learned from her family, especially her father, who obviously enjoys the same thing. Her husband, Turner Vinson, paints outdoors while she photographs and their daughter, Byrd, is strapped to whoever needs to move less.

About her work, Teysha Vinson says: “As a Christian, I believe that God is omnipresent, meaning he is near us in both our most emotional states and in our most banal. In my photographs, I try to show a place that could be anywhere but with a touch of magic — this magic being light or color — that makes the image transcendent. In doing this, I hope to show the potential for Christ to come in and beautify even our most longing or frustrating moments.”

Turner Vinson obtained a BFA in Photography in 2010, and studied with impressionist oil painter, Gary Holland in Boise Idaho. Turner is often painting the Abilene area, as well as various parts of the country throughout the year. You can see more of his work at www.TurnerVinson.com as well as sign up for his new 2017 newsletter where he will be raffling off a free painting each month.

About his work, Turner says: “I often find inspiration for paintings in my own backyard, in a family member’s gaze, or the neighborhood I live in. An important factor in my painting process is working from life. Choosing to work this way allows for an intimate experience with my subject matter that can be obtained no other way. The majority of my work is landscape oil paintings done on location. The time invested in each location that I paint provides a deep connection, understanding, and experience that I hope to communicate in each of my paintings.”

Tony Brown says his family is bountiful with artists. His two older sisters are artists, his wife was a potter, one of their daughters is currently studying Theater Tech and Stage Design, and of course he is sharing this exhibition with their other artistically talented daughter and son-in-law..

About his artwork, Tony Brown says: “I had lots of exposure to art at an early age. Both of my parents were academics, and we often took in art museums all over the world. As a teenager, I was especially inspired by two museums. In Mexico City, I fell in love with the artwork of the Mayans and Aztecs which was rich in sculpture and relief pieces. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam exposed me to the most wonderful of colors! These things compel me today. I think I have spent my life investigating shape, texture, and color. Sounds simple, but it is true. When I do my mixed media reliefs, I use bondo, t-shirt paints, exterior spackle, wood, and the palette knife to get the 3-D effects on canvas.”
