Hardin-Simmons Military Veterans Association Meets ROTC Alumni

During HSU Homecoming 2014 the newly formed Military Veterans Association met with members of the HSU ROTC Alumni for breakfast.

As Veterans Day approaches Hardin-Simmons is reminded of the sacrifice that our service men and women make daily for the sake of our civil liberties and safety.

This year we are proud to announce that our military students have formed the Military Veterans Association (MVA) of Hardin-Simmons to bridge the gap between the university and our brave service members and their families.

As their first act they paired up with our ROTC Alumni at the 2014 Homecoming festivities for a veterans breakfast.  During this time the MVA broke bread with military members of years past and brought new meaning into the gathering that has been happening for over ten years.

Dennis Meadows, senior criminal justice major and the MVA Vice President, explained the need for the group.  “We felt it was important to have an organization for advocacy on behalf of our veteran students,” he said.  “Veterans have special needs, such as counseling, tutoring, and extra paperwork; this gives us the opportunity to help.”

The group is made up of former Air Force, Navy, Army and Marines, all who have a passion for education and America.

During the breakfast, Agustin De La Rosa, Air Force veteran and 1974 HSU graduate expressed his gratitude to the group.  “We thank you for all that you have done and started, it keeps this alive for us,” he said.

The Military Veterans Association of HSU continues to make great strides in their relationships with traditional students and with the university.  They currently meet on first Thursday of the month in Moody Center at 9:30 am and can be found wearing their red shirts on Fridays.

For more information on the organization you can contact Dennis Meadows at DMeadows366@gmail.com.

As an added honor Hardin-Simmons welcomes all active duty, guard, and reserve and their dependents to join the Cowboys as they host East Texas Baptist University at Shelton Stadium on November 8, 2014.  All military members, veterans and their dependents will be admitted to the game for FREE.
