HSU Will Help Save Lives at Swab Abilene Event

October 27, 2016 Meredith Foster (Student Writer)

HSU will participate in the Swab Abilene event from October 31 through November 4 and compete against McMurry and ACU to see which school can get the most donors to help stop blood and bone marrow cancer.

There are two ways students can help: volunteers can simply swab a cotton swab inside their cheek or staff a volunteer table. Volunteers must be between 18 to 55 to be a donor and be in good health.

To sign up to be a donor, stop by Moody Student Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to fill out a form and swab your cheek.

To sign up to work the donation table students can go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090b48aaae2da5fc1-give, or students can meet in advance with Brian Dawson, Dean of Students, in Moody 210.

“You can help change the world and sign to be a blood/bone marrow donor right here at HSU,” Dawson said.

Dawson and Earl Young, U.S. Olympic gold medalist and ACU alumni, have put together the Swab Abilene Event to help find and register bone marrow donors to help fight blood cancer.

Young won his track and field gold medal in 1960 and was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. He received a life-saving transplant from a donor in January 2012.

Earl Young’s Team, Young’s organization, partners with DKMS to raise awareness and find bone marrow donors in the U.S. by holding registration drives.

HSU’s goal is to have 1,000 student, faculty, and staff on the donor list
