BSM Hosts Cowboy Christmas for Underprivileged Kids

Hosted by HSU since the 1970s, the traditional Adopt a Child event has a new name – Cowboy Christmas – and the same giving spirit.

Cowboy Christmas hosted about 50 children from two local elementary schools on November 29 for the annual event sponsored by the Baptist Student Ministries. Recommended for the event by their teachers, the children are partnered with a volunteer who buys them a Christmas present and spends the day with them.

“Watching the HSU students interact with the young children always leaves you with a great feeling. The tenderness that our students show toward the children makes you proud to be a part of the HSU family,” said Terri Prestidge, office manager for Baptist Student Ministries.

FreshCo (Freshman Council) was responsible for recruiting volunteers and for planning the party. The group incorporated some new party activities this year, with a carnival themed party planned by FreshCo. Children were able to rotate from station-to-station to play different games and win prizes.

This Cowboy Christmas also received another surprise because this year SABERS donated stockings filled with treats made possible from the money raised at the Turkey Day 5K. The Staff Senate also donated goodie bags with hygiene items and snacks.
