Alumna Jennifer Smothermon Named as Presiding Officer of Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists

HSU alumna Jennifer Smothermon was named by Gov. Greg Abbott on February 26th as presiding officer of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists. Smothermon has served on the board since 2008.

The board determines the qualifications and fitness of a license applicant under this chapter and adopt a code of professional ethics for license holders. Her term on the board is set to expire on February 1, 2021.

Smothermon, an Abilene resident, is the director of development and therapist for the Ministry of Counseling and Enrichment. She is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapist, Texas Association of Marriage and Family Therapist, American Association of Christian Counselors, Abilene Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and Big Country Counseling Association.

Smotherman received her Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Psychology and Bible in 1998 and her Master of Arts in Family Psychology in 2000. She also served as an adjunct professor of psychology at Hardin-Simmons from 2002 to 2006.
